Dr. Figueroa is an excellent poetry teacher. He is enthusiastic and gets the class enthusiastic. I have had him for 2238 as well, and both classes were incredibly enthusiastic and fun. Many students in both classes considered their class with him their most enjoyable and interesting of the semester. Excellent Class. Thanks again.

In all my years of English, I must say I believe this is the best instructor I have ever had. He has taught me much about poetry and drama. He has helped me to develop my own creativity and writing. And above all, he has opened new doors of thinking for me. This class was challenging; however, the work required was extremely reasonable. Mr. Figueroa has made a difference in my learning and my life. He is not only the best English teacher, but also the best teacher I've encountered so far at UNO. Thanks.

Dr. Figueroa is an excellent instructor. He challenged me more than any other instructor. This is one class I hated to have end. He has the stuff that makes an impact. His standard is the highest.

Dr. Figueroa is an extremely passionate teacher. He allows your thinking process to further its potential. I would recommend him to anyone. He opens new doors and gives insight to new topics.

I would just like to say that I dreaded taking this class before the first class. After the first day, it was my favorite and I looked forward to the class. Professor Figueroa is by far the most interesting teacher I have ever had. It was his insight and openness to new ideas that made this formerly dreaded class very enjoyable and meaningful to me.

Dr. Figueroa is a very strong professor that definitely challenges us to think. His class involves a lot of thinking in terms of what the poetry/plays meant to us individually. The lessons that I have learned are definitely worth telling to others and are something that I will always have forever.

Dr. Figueroa, in my opinion, is an excellent professor. He handles the material well and has encouraged me to think instead of repeating useless spoonfed information. I have not a single complaint. And this has nothing to do with my ability in this class because the best that I can expect is a "c".

About course: I liked it. Wasn't what I expected. I expected poem analysis dictated to me. Wasn't that at all. Due to the teacher.
About teacher: Wonderful! Challenged me to think. I saw new things in a different light. Always a pleasure to attend class. This class was not an obligation, it was a privilege. I never skipped it once.

One of the best classes I've taken during my academic career. My only regret is that I'm so near to graduation that I can't take more of his classes.

The best aspects of this class were that Dr. Figueroa encouraged us to develop our ideas, question ideas until we have a good grasp on the topic, and made poetry interesting.  I have read poems in high school and in classes at Loyola that I cannot remember, but I believe that I will never forget the poems and topics discussed in class. Dr. Figueroa's method of teaching is hard to describe, but it is very refreshing.

Dr. Figueroa was always well prepared for class. He challenged the class to think hard, but always explained it enough so we could form our own opinions. I would recommend this teacher to anyone who asked. He is of the few teachers at this university that I actually like.

Dr. Figueroa was one of the best instructors I have ever had. he has challenged me to think for myself and express myself. I would recommend him to any student.

I didn't like the course too much, but Dr. Figueroa is a great instructor who obviously cares about his students. UNO should do whatever it takes to keep him teaching here.

Dr. Figueroa has effective ways of teaching that have challenged me to learn. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and he has helped me develop better writing skills.

I enjoyed this class a great deal. I liked the structure of the class in that our discussions got me thinking about the topic and gave me direction in writing my papers. I would recommend this class to anyone, and I plan on taking this professor again, if possible.

Dr. Figueroa needs to try a different approach to teaching. He must expect that a freshman class will not participate in as much class discussion as a senior class would. So I think he would be more effective if he encouraged students to talk more, rather than expressing his opinions the entire class period. He does know how to write and he could probably teach me alot if he did not always try to get his opinion into the topic. He tends to grade more on the opinion instead of the work.

1158 is a pain. Why spend all this time writing papers then taking a proficiency exam when you might not pass. Why people judge the way I write is right or wrong? 1158 could be a little easier with not so much judgement on writing.  Figueroa was nice but he has a baby and I think he needs to spend time with him because Mr. F. comes to class mostly stressed out.

I do not feel that the instructor graded papers fairly. He is way too hard on evaluation. I like Dr. Figueroa as a person, but I don't think he is a good teacher. I would not take this class again.

The discussions in class were not always helpful and in some cases were a waste of time. He was helpful in terms of providing ideas for the essay topics if help were needed.

I feel that the instructor goes off the topics, that should be discussed in class, too much. I also feel that he should tone down his vocabulary a little bit because using 15 lettered words can be difficult to translate. I also feel that the instructor is good/helpful in certain aspects as far as conferences are concerned, but I disagree with the way he changes his mind after it is written on paper.

I enjoyed his teaching style and his overall interest in what he was teaching. I would highly recommend him to anyone taking this course

Dr. Figueroa has a very unique way of teaching. He's never dull or boring. He is one of the most challenging and effective English teachers I ever had.

He came off kind of arrogant. I also feel class discussions did not help much directly  to class assignments.

Figueroa is an excellent instructor. He is very careful when giving criticism on our papers so he can give the most help to students. He is very reasonable when it comes to students and their lives. I would love to take another course with him.

Dr. Figueroa has really been an outstanding professor. His knowledge of writing papers really helped me learn the correct way to write an essay. Although it was alot of work, I am definitely more prepared than ever.

Teacher really seems to know the course objective. And does a good job in teaching.

Dr. Figueroa is a very helpful teacher who challenged my thinking and writing ability. I would recommend him to anyone.

The instructor inspired me to question and examine my beliefs and to be open to new ideas. The course was so vivid with the many "colors" of human individualities and beliefs.

Dr. Figueroa pushed me to do my best and he was reasonable when he graded my papers towards the end of the semester. He did, however, grade my first two papers a bit unfairly. He isn't boring and I would recommend him to other students. He was patient when it came to in-class papers. (I am not good with in-class papers because I got writer's block). He was very understanding about my case of writer's block.

Effort should weigh more. Grading was difficult.

The class was good but could have spent the first classes going over general English rule, commas, semi-colins, colins, etc.

Dr. Figueroa did an OK job, but I felt that after taking 1157, 1158 was boring and unnecessary.

Dr. Figgy was so cute! I really enjoyed his out-of-class help.

I have great admiration for the instructor of the class. The way he presented difficult topics have been done in a very thorough and good manner. He has made me start thinking of many subjects within myself that I never have previously questioned. This is my last English class and definitely the best one I have had by far. I strongly recommend him to friends that if you are taking English classes, this is the instructor to choose! A+

Dr. Figueroa is, without a doubt, one of the best teachers I have had at UNO. He effectively challenges his students to think and he makes class interesting. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

I have taken three classes with this professor. He gets even better every time. Dr. Figueroa is what every teacher should be: A caring and inspirational person. You can actually apply anything from any of his classes to real life. I always highly recommend his classes for everyone.

If I were grading Dr. Figueroa I'd give him an A+ for teaching, for listening and for learning just as much from us as we did from him. He never once discouraged an opinion that was opposite his; he only asked why. Why do we believe? What is the truth? Why is this real to you? You all would be crazy not to hold on to him. For what you are paying him you should be kissing his ass. For all of that, I give him an A+.

Dr. Figueroa is an excellent instructor! This class has made me look into myself for learning. Dr. Figueroa makes learning Fun!

I thoroughly enjoyed taking this class. I was dreading taking my last English literature, especially poetry and drama, but Dr. Figueroa really changed the way I look at things. I got things out of this class that will help me through life. Dr.Figueroa is an excellent instructor. He really cares about his students.

It was a pleasure to be taught by Dr. Figueroa. He instilled feelings about poetry in me that I never had or wanted to have. I always considered poetry to be stupid and words rhyming together. But I have learned otherwise. He also made my look at myself, look at my feelings and question alot of things. I will recommend taking 2248 with Figueroa.

Dr. Figueroa's class was intense and insightful. I enjoyed every minute of it and would recommend him to anyone. I have learned more in this class than I have learned in the two years I've attended this University. I think we all need to learn about 2248-5 Spring 1996 Pg. 2.

Dr. Figueroa makes this class very challenging. It takes a while to figure out what his intentions are, but when it becomes clear it is surprisingly different and somewhat mind-boggling. Great class, I will absolutely recommend it to others. Don't change style!

Dr. Figueroa is a great professor who challenges me to learn. I had him for Tech Writing 2152, and I made sure I had him for literature. He expresses his viewpoints so we try to challenge or refute; therefore, we are learning and creating unique thoughts, ideas, and feelings. My easiest class, not because of level, but because I enjoyed and appreciated Dr. F.

The instructor is a very thought provoking guy. Sometimes, seems to think he has "the answer" to everything. Knows alot about the poetry he teaches and life in general. He helps to raise the awareness of the people in the class to another level. This is an excellent class.

This was one of the most enjoyable classes I have taken so far at UNO. It challenged me to think of things I never would have thought about before. Dr. Figueroa is an excellent teacher and I wish more professors were more like him.

This class was a great experience for me. It has taught me about myself and opened my eyes to prospects I never thought to seek. Dr. Figueroa, you have been an inspiration (if you're reading this!!). Actually, I should say what I've learned and what you've passed on in the class has inspired me to believe in the happiness that could and most likely will happen on Earth. I never thought poetry could have such an effect on how life is due to exist for us in the way we want it to be. In essence, this class was great for me especially in the timing of this semester when things were rough for me. I really, really, really enjoyed the discussions in class and topics we touched base with in class. Dr. Figueroa is great! I would highly recommend this class to any of my peers.

Strong passion for teaching. A little idealistic. Could give a little more time to different viewpoints. He allows everyone to talk but responds a little too quickly. I think in our class many people didn't talk much because they were truly in thought. I was frustrated some of the time and wanted to spend more time on the actual poems than their meaning in our lives, but I think overall it is an excellent class.

I learned in this course that poetry is not something you have to learn. You find out about life. But I would not have learned from any other teacher. Dr. Figueroa is one of the best teachers I have had. I learned more from him this semester than my first 3 years of college that I have been here.

I very much enjoyed this English class. I am sure the instructor was a very big part of it. He was very energetic, interesting, and he made me eager to learn more. I used to hate poetry, but not anymore. It has made me think about my life and my actions.

This course is very different from most I have taken. I have really learned alot from Dr. Figueroa. He allows his students to really think, not just be lectured to. This is a class most people should take at least once for the unique and enlightening experience.

Yes, it's been some kind o' semester. The class was challenging and at time I didn't like it. I'm glad I took this course instead of a world or US lit. course.

This class has helped me in so many ways in my life that I wouldn't be able to write them all down. I would like to say that Dr. Figueroa is the main reason I'm staying in school because his teaching methods were so good.

I have had Dr. Figueroa for a teacher before in my 1158 English class. I learned alot in that class and I enjoyed having him as my teacher. When I signed up for this poetry class, I thought that it was going to be a class where you just read poems and take tests on them just memorizing lines and putting them down on paper. When I learned that my teacher was Dr. Figueroa, I was thrilled. I learned alot about life and about myself this semester and was very glad that I chose this class. I think that Dr. Figueroa is an excellent teacher and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. He definitely knows what he is talking about and has an interesting way of expressing his ideas in a way that gets you to think. I hope that in the future, I am able to get another class with Dr. Figueroa as my instructor once again.

I have taken 5 English classes at UNO and by far Dr. Figueroa is the best professor ever. He is an asset to this school and to his profession. Although I am not as studious as I should be, I have learned much more from this class than could be learned by books alone. Because of my personal situation, I was unable to attend all the classes, but all in all Dr. Figueroa and this course were awesome. I have much gratitude for him and the lessons I have learned from his and the class. Thank you Dr. F.!

This was the most interesting class I have ever taken. I feel the instructor had a wealth of wisdom to offer the students. The class was very thought provoking about the real truths in life. A very enjoyable class.

This class would be awfully boring if the instructor wasn't expressive and had a great knowledge of the material. Dr. Figueroa explained in detail what poetry is and how it affected our lives. My eyes are open. Thank you.

This class is by far my favorite class that have ever taken. Dr. Figueroa taught me more about poetry than I ever thought I wanted to know. He has made a great impact on my life in that I now have an incredible thirst to learn. Not only did I learn alot about literature, but I also learned alot about life.

I enjoyed this class because of both the subject matter as well as the instructor. My major is English and Dr. Figueroa presented the material in a way which I found to be enjoyable. He encouraged us to interrelate the material with our lives, creating more provocative thinking techniques.

I wouldn't recommend this instructor to a dullard. Despite his ability to fascinate and intrigue, I think his time would be wasted if he had to deal with fools.

I enjoyed this class very much. Even though I missed my share of class, I feel I got alot out of the class. Many of the things we talked of, I was able to relate to my own life. this class has made me look at things a little differently. I'm glad you were my instructor. Poetry has never been so fun.

I enjoyed the method Dr. F. used in helping with our papers. He worked one on one with us explaining where our weaknesses and string points were. He really helped to develop my writing confidence. I feel the topics chosen by the department were somewhat irrelevant. It was hard to write on topics which were vaguely understood. Topics like affirmative action and political correctness, were not stimulating enough to provoke great writing. The better topics were those we felt more strongly about. These topics included, what is college for, defend your curriculum, and solving a problem.

I enjoyed the exchanging of ideas among the students in the class. The discussion of the topic assigned in class really helped me develop a  broad view on the topics. The only thing I would change in the course would be the allotted time given in the course for students to get personal feedback from the instructor on the papers.

Dr. Figueroa has made my 1158 experience enjoyable. He made the best of every paper assigned. Dr. Figueroa's way of having in-class papers is great. It prepares you for the proficiency exam. The scenario is presented when the paper is to be written, not prior. One thing I believe needs to be changed is the reading assignments, more need to be given.

I enjoyed this class. Something that was different from the other teachers was he was able to separate his viewpoints from our own. The teacher was open to all our points. The only thing that was different that was bad was the subjects weren't as easy to write about  compared to the other classes.

I disliked the topics of affirmative action and political correctness.

I would like to see open discussion continue. It helps to understand different sides of topics. I would recommend Dr. Figueroa to other students.

I really liked the way that this course and classroom ran.

Dr. Figueroa was an excellent teacher. I enjoyed his class and understood the assignments clearly. The last paper was stupid. I hated writing it. The topic should be different.

Dr. Figueroa enters the class with a positive attitude, which helps the class get involved. He makes everyone want to go to class because he is outgoing. Most English teachers are boring,
but Dr. Figueroa is not. I would definitely recommend Dr. Figueroa to my friends.

I liked this class and hope to see more English classes taught this way. The reason I enjoyed this class so much was because I was allowed to express my own views on the topics covered in class. This allowed me to think logically about different views on the topics covered in class. My professor allowed us to write this way and this allowed me to write better essays. I hope other English classes adopt this way of teaching because it makes students think about the topics, therefore, allowing students to write better papers.

I enjoyed writing on personal problems or personal ideas and discussions. I hope that those who are not present will receive a lower grade even if their papers are excellent. Those who attend class and have so-so papers, I feel are trying, including myself. I did not enjoy writing about affirmative action or political correctness, and I feel reading those stories do not help.

I would recommend Dr. Figueroa to other students. He makes the class and course work interesting by telling jokes. It was a joy being in his class. Students should be allowed to make up essays, if they were absent because of an illness (if they had a doctor's note).

Dr. Figueroa is an extremely well-rounded professor. He teaches class with alot of enthusiasm. I a sense he makes the class fun with certain discussion groups and his lectures.

I really enjoyed taking this class. The instructor really encouraged, and persuaded me to learn. I really did get alot out of this class not just factual material but also insights and ideas. I would highly recommend this instructor to other students (I already have). I think for once in a English class, I can say I have actually read everything thoroughly and enjoyed it completely. I felt that I was really motivated by the instructor.

I really enjoyed your class. Your teaching methods helped me learn and at the same time enjoy the class. Thank you for your caring mannerisms. You are a wonderful professor who looks at his students as people, not just numbers. I hope in the future I might run across you again in either one of your classes or for help in another class. What I liked best about this course was that I learned so much about my own identity through what I learned about the characters in the stories. I also liked the structure of the class--it was challenging because in order to participate it was necessary to prepare myself for class. Dr. Figueroa has excellent methods of teaching and for the first time I truly appreciated literature. He is an excellent professor and I think that the class is fine the way it is.

What I liked best about this course was the necessity of keeping a journal. It greatly helped to develop my skills, such as they are, in the writing of essays. It was also a stimulus in the development of my own viewpoints on a variety of issues. It was very challenging. What I disliked about this course was the journals. The reasons for  this is my personal lack of preparedness for the amount of work needed and its frequency. However, I don't feel this is a reflection on the requirement or the instruction, but only my own lack of preparedness and experience.

Instructor provides great interaction and knowledge to his students. Expectations of course workload are a little too much. Novels are depressing.

This course was my most favorite course out of all my classes. I thoroughly enjoyed the literature that we studied and I also enjoyed Mr. Figueroa's style of teaching. I like literature and I feel that I got  alot out of the class, things that I didn't know before the class. I feel enlightened and enthused when I leave the class and it's almost like the feeling you get when you come out of church. The only bad aspect of the class was that I got bogged down towards the end because of the long novels to read but otherwise it was a great class.

Mr. Figueroa uses jokes as a way to get the student to open up. He should keep doing that.

Dr. Figueroa, I would like to thank you for your time this semester. Normally, I do real poor in literature being that I failed 2238 last fall. But with your teaching ethics it was real easy for me to pick up the material. I enjoyed your class very much. Jenn and I both agree that your class was lots of fun and we often looked forward to your class. Hopefully, I'll see you around campus in the future. Thanks.

I liked the novels and short stories chosen. More small group discussions have helped because I feel more comfortable participating in them.

The course was very good. The class was laid back yet we still learned a great deal. The instructor amply allowed for problems a student may have outside of class that may hinder his classroom performance. Most of all, it was a fun class. Change nothing, highly recommended.

I think the class was very interesting. I learned alot and it made me think and analyze my life. You are a very good teacher. I would definitely recommend you. Hopefully, one day I will take to heart what I have learned and make myself better. At the beginning of the semester I thought the class was going to be hard for me to handle but I am glad I stuck through it. I wish I would get you as my teacher next semester. What Would I change? Nothing, I like your method of presentation. The only thing I did not like was writing papers, but I guess it helped expand my knowledge. Good luck next semester!

English 2238 has been a great class. This class was alot like some of my high school English classes all put together into one. Dr. Figueroa has been a great prof., I really enjoyed his style of teaching and the way he gets to know each and every student. He seems to have a lot of respect for an individual person. The only thing I would like to see changed about the class is the novels chosen to read.

I felt that the class was very comfortable and this was due to Dr. Figueroa had this as an objective. I liked the way he interpreted the stories because it sometimes gave me a different perspective. I am very excited about the stories and the novels we read, and was glad that I was given the chance to read them because I am sure I wouldn't have otherwise. The least thing I liked was sometimes there was pressure for us to speak out. This didn't happen too often but I very much disliked it due to the fact that I'm a pretty quiet person. I liked having the journals to express my thoughts instead.

Fun class!!

I liked the laid back attitude of the class. I also thought Dr. Figueroa was fair but at the same time very challenging. I didn't like having to read so many novels. It was hard to cram in the fourth novel.

I liked the short stories best about this class. They were the easiest to relate to and to understand. However, I think that waiting until the very end of the semester to read 4 boring novels was unfair. The novel limit should be decreased to 2 novels and not 4.

I really enjoyed the materials and the way they were presented in this class. I really liked how there was an overall theme to the whole semester. The theme was accurately depicted and the materials were chosen wisely. I was challenged to think very creatively which I liked and is rare in this type of class. The instructor inspired classroom discussion and thought into the topics. Great Class! The only thing I would change about the class is better punctuality. But hey, it's early.

Dr. Figueroa is a great teacher. He explains the material very well and he goes over everything thoroughly. His laid back attitude is definitely better than the rest of my uptight and dull classes. The class atmosphere is fun, but at the same time stimulating. The stories he picked were interesting and I like most of them. Don't change a thing.

I thought the class was very well presented and I can honestly say that I enjoyed the material and would recommend this class to someone else. The instructor was very prepared for class and looked very enthusiastic about the teaching material. He made the class very fun and was probably the best class I took this semester.

I enjoyed this class completely. It was laid back and interesting. The teacher was funny while instructing us to learn how and what to look for in stories and novels. It was interesting to see how other classes and life events relate to English and its stories. I enjoyed having challenging assignments, instead of the regular ordinary paper. !Thanx!

I really enjoyed this class. It was very interesting. I would recommend class to everyone. I think Dr. Figueroa picked very interesting short stories, and novels for us to read. And our class discussions made it more interesting.

I like the approach he took in teaching the class. He kind've teaches in a manner that gets everyone involved.

The course is fine. We wasted some time, but that made the class more pleasant.
This course was swell because I got to read short stories and novel I probably wouldn't have read otherwise. I also like the fact that the course concentrated more on opinions rather than dull analysis, summaries, etc. Bad aspects of the course is I felt the novels were kind of rushed. Maybe less novels should be required or less short stories to accommodate for time that can be spent on the novels.

Novels and short stories need to be combined instead of all at once. The 4 back to back novels were too much work at one time.

I think this class is very good. I would recommend it to other students to take. He is a very good teacher and gets his point over very well. I would not change anything about the class. It can stay like it is.

I wouldn't change a thing about this class. I enjoyed this class and would strongly recommend someone else to take it. The class was interesting because of the instructor and the students who attended class.

The thing I liked most about the class was that he teaches you not only literature but life. He takes the class discussions and relates them to everyday life and what you will have to face in the outside world. There is nothing really unfair about his class.

Overall I feel that he is a very good instructor. Don't change.

I feel this class was very rewarding. He's a good professor because he makes it fun and not boring. I like when we would get into groups and discuss. Or one big group. Don't change a thing.
 

I liked most of the stories that we had to read. I feel like he picked out appropriate one because most had a similar theme or purpose. I thought that his method of teaching was definitely effective because he uses real life examples and I could see the comparison. I thought the teacher made the course interesting. I've had a few other English classes and I always dreaded going to them but I truly enjoyed him as a teacher. I thought that there should maybe be a few less books to read because we weren't able to go into depth with some of the books. I feel like we rushed through a few parts of the book.
 

Relating the course to our lives and using the novels to illustrate morals or objectives for us to strive for are the good aspects. Class time was interesting and the lack of blatant English techniques (like metaphors) was nice. I did not like the fact that we had to read Wuthering Heights and Gatsby because they were altogether too boring. Try shorter, more interesting novels! I also feel that I worked way too hard and read all of those damn things and killed myself, and I saw all of those "B"'s... Yes you now know who wrote this.

I really enjoyed attending this class. Dr. Figueroa made the atmosphere very homey and relaxed. It was unfortunate that all too often he received complaints from some students for relatively easy assignments. Perhaps the only thing I didn't enjoy was that more emphasis wasn't put on what EXACTLY was expected in papers. Besides that, everything was great.

Dr. Figueroa's teaching style was excellent. He made difficult topics fun to talk about and later write about. He has been my first college professor that made me feel like a real person. Sometimes I feel that he doesn't take charge of his environment and "tighten up" the class to keep us focused.

This was the best English I have taken here at UNO. The reason for that is that Dr. Figueroa didn't sugarcoat things to make us feel better. He told us how things were and what we had to do to change it.

I think that Dr. Figueroa is the best English teacher I've ever had. I had Ms. Fink last semester and now I look back and she was awful. He is not robotic, he cares about each student and he feels more like a friend than some boring dud teacher. He makes you feel like learning. He is also very fair and thorough. We learn in class but have fun at the same time. He is much more on a student level and achieves greater results. This teacher gets an A. But to the Engl. dept. the topics of politics in 1158 are USELESS! Believe me as a student. No one gives a damn about politics!!!

Dr. Figueroa, I enjoyed your class very much. It was awkward for me to take this class, but you made me feel more at ease. Thank you very much for your kindness. You really don't need to change anything except using class time a little more to go over topics.

This class was great. I learned a lot about my writing but most importantly how to organize. Hopefully, the skills I have learned in this class will help me further in my other classes. I would have chosen other topics. Although it was no fault of the instructor. I think that contributed to any problems.

The class was good. But I wish we would have done more readings because reading essays helps me to improve in my writing. Overall, he's a good teacher and I did learn from him.

Rough drafts helped me the most. Enabled me to receive criticism before  final draft. Research papers should be rid of because sometimes you cannot find enough information on your topic, or the information is poor.

I think the teacher was very helpful and patient with this class. I respect him for the way he challenged the class and handled the problems that evolved in it.

I honestly enjoyed the class. My writing has improved and Dr. Figueroa has boosted my confidence. I admire his faith in us and would strongly advise other students to take his class. The course was okay, but the topics could have been better and more interesting.

Dr. Figueroa has a unique teaching method especially in a college atmosphere. He is energetic and seems to like what he is doing. Personally, I have never liked to write papers and such, but Dr. Figueroa's class kept me going. I wanted to think and started to kind of enjoy writing and expressing my ideas. Dr. Figueroa is a very down-to-earth teacher. He does not avoid us outside the classroom and always open to suggestions. He is always there if I need someone to talk with. He listens to me and gives me pretty good advice. I enjoy his way of teaching and his grading is very useful. He grades fairly and all his comments reflect my overall grade.

Enjoyed course. I'm sorry I won't be able to take Dr. Figueroa's 1158 course due to a scheduling conflict.

How can mediocre writing impress a Doctor of English?

Well, generally the instructor is helpful. His grading is quite vague. This particular fact is disturbing. He is very good about describing what we need to do. However, he does not expect alot from every student. I think he grades on individual capability. That sometimes is frustrating. To make an "A" on a paper it seems that it must be publishable. Why doesn't he at lease say that in the beginning. He has a modified bell curve in beginning where everybody fails or makes a "D". This frankly is not what I call stimulating as he probably does in some psychological maner. I think it caused people to drop. I do well in the course but the grades are too hard to make.

I feel that Dr. Figueroa taught me alot about writing. The course was entertaining, as well as a challenge. I feel Dr. Figueroa did an excellent job in motivating us to do well.

I had Dr. Figueroa for 1157 and 1158. I learned alot about writing. I have also learned to be patient with others and their opinions and use it as a learning experience rather than a gripe session. You can tell that he only wants the best for his students. he isn't out to get anyone. I also liked the class discussions alot.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking this course and I think the credit should go to the teacher. I think he chose reading material that was interesting and a bit challenging. Also, he has very effective teaching methods. I did not find him dull and boring as other English professors I have had. Him being younger than most of my other English professors also added to the enjoyment because he was better at relating the poem to things in our generation. I loved this class. He is an excellent instructor. I liked how he taught the poems to us with real life examples. he used the board very well. It helps us with taking notes. His tests were very good. I would recommend this class to anyone anyday! I would not change a thing!

The tests we took this semester were graded harshly. Not only was the grading hard, it was not explained why we received the low grades. A big change from the previous semester. When you put down everything that you know about a poem from notes taken in class, and the only thing that is supposed to be defined is a quote, and only come out with a high C or a low B, I think there is a problem.

Fernando doesn't load his students down with too many poems in one night. He would rather do two poems and have the class get something out of them than do five poems and never even get to discuss some of them.

I was very hesitant about taking Engl.2248, but Dr. Figueroa has made this class very interesting. I have learned alot in this class and would recommend Dr. Figueroa to other students. He is extremely fair, listens to everyone's comments and has challenged me to learn.

I am an avid reader. At 70, I calculate that I have read at least 250 volumes. Mr. Figueroa's presentation has given me a new point of view and it is my intention to reread the best of what I have read--the universe permitting.

Fernando Figueroa had been, by far, the most interesting, challenging, and open minded teacher I have ever had at UNO. He is the only professor who, I can say, honestly care that his students learn from his class.

Professor Figueroa was terrific!

Even a bitter person can enjoy an intelligent and stimulating English class!

This was the best English class I have ever taken in my life. It would be cruel to rob the students of this university of Dr. Figueroa and his excellent teaching skills.

Dr. Figueroa was an excellent teacher--He really made me feel like I did well, and that I could express myself.

I felt that Dr. Figueroa is very passionate about what he does. This is never more evident than in his lectures and class discussions. He taught more about literature than I had ever known before.

Dr. Figuera has been a very effective teacher. His instruction and guidance goes beyond the classroom. He has taught me much more that just "how" to interpret a story. His interepretations and advice have influenced other facets of my life. Dr. Figueroa's method of teaching should be adopted by all other professors. His style and execution are definitely the most effective.
